CH2.EP1: What is My Greater Purpose? (Baltimore, MD)

For this dinner, we invited a group of strangers who all work and are committed to creating equitable access to education, though in very different ways from one another. In our invitations, we asked them to think about how they would introduce themselves if they weren’t allowed to reveal their title or employer. Each came to the table prepared to introduce themselves for who they are as whole people, without discussing their roles in specifics.

Why did we do this? Each person invited to one of our dinners is invited very intentionally because they should know each person they’re sharing dinner with for a number of reasons. I wanted to facilitate this dinner a little differently because I’ve found that educators and those committed to creating equitable access to education tend to put the work and others first, rarely introducing the other parts of who they are. I wanted them to gift them an evening to share space with people who give selflessly in similar ways, but get to meet each other as whole people, or as much of themselves they would be willing to share with one another.

In this first episode of Chapter Two of the dinner series, the guests answer the questions: How do you meet new people? Specifically, as we come out of a time when new connections had to be intentional in ways that were not always second nature or intuitive. What is the biggest lesson learned in the last year?

Tune in to listen to this amazing group of humans as they unpack these questions together. And remember, this isn’t the end of the conversation. Be sure to tune back in next week for the second episode in this chapter of The Traveling Table.

This is an unscripted social experiment where guests discuss a series of hard topics that go below the surface. We invite guests to the table where difficult conversations can be shared in a safe space. Should a particular conversation, word choice, and/or phrasing provoke a reaction, we ask that you show grace and guidance in your comments directed at guests. This experience will hopefully provoke self-reflection, lessons, and a desire from guests and viewers to learn from one another's stories.
